Avery Mahan is a native of Rockwall, Texas. In Spring 2023, she graduated from Oklahoma City University with her Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance, Magna cum Laude, where she was in the voice studio of Dr. Autumn West. Avery is currently based in Boston, Massachusetts, where she studies at Boston Conservatory at Berklee in the voice studio of Dr. Rebecca Folsom. She anticipates her Master’s of Music in Opera Performance in Spring 2026.
In September 2024, Ms. Mahan made her house debut with Opera Roanoke performing the role of Miss Jessel in Britten’s The Turn of The Screw, conducted by Steven White and directed by Dean Anthony. In 2023, Avery made her role debut as Miss Jessel at the Brevard Music Center as a returning member of their resident Janiec Opera Company. That same summer, she performed as a soloist in the company’s Gershwin revue concert, sang in the choir for Verdi’s Requiem with the Brevard Festival Orchestra, and performed with Patti Lupone alongside her Janiec Opera Company colleagues.
During her first summer at the Brevard Music Center in 2022, Avery covered Micaëla in Carmen and Antonia in Man of La Mancha. She also performed scenes with orchestra from some of opera’s most beloved works, excerpting the roles of Donna Anna, Musetta, Fiordiligi, and Erste Dame, all conducted by Steven White.
A developing competitor, Ms. Mahan competed at the Tulsa District of the Metropolitan Opera’s Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition in their 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 cycles. In the 2022-2023 competition, she earned one of the District’s Encouragement Awards. The same year, Avery was named an Alternate for the final rounds of Opera Grand Rapids’s VanderLaan Prize.
While completing her undergraduate studies at Oklahoma City University, Ms. Mahan covered the role of Beth March in Adamo’s Little Women and performed as Mother in a world-premiere English translation of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.
In her free time, Avery enjoys pursuing her next caffeinated beverage, knitting, and completing the New York Times crossword. She is entirely at the behest of her tortoiseshell cat and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
